Vaginal Mesh Complications | Transvaginal Mesh Complications:
- Vaginal Mesh erosion is a major complication of vaginal mesh. The erosion through the vaginal wall, which is also called exposure, extrusion or protrusion, results when the mesh implants erode the surrounding tissue. Vaginal mesh was designed to allow tissue to grow in, through, and around the mesh allowing it to become stronger. When it fails, it is difficult to remove due to the tissue “holding” the residual mesh and the need to preserve some of the integrity of the affected organs.
- Pain, including during sexual intercourse, which can be cause when the vaginal mesh begins to erode or contract, causing severe pelvic pain and even the inability to engage in sexual intercourse. This mesh complication can affect the woman suffering from it as well as her partner due to the sharpness of the protruding mesh.
- Infection complications due to eroded tissue being exposed to bacteria (the woman becoming a compromised host as the result of the mesh failure). These infections can lead to the complication of sepsis, a potentially deadly superinfection.
- A complication that can be less severe is vaginal bleeding and/or discharge, but this, too, can exacerbate into a serious bleeding or infection complication of vaginal mesh surgery.
- When the mesh implant is unsuccessful/fails the pelvic organs again “drop” or prolapse, a complication that can lead to additional surgery(s).
- Incontinence or leakage of urine that can be resting or as the result of coughing, sneezing, or exercise.
- Vaginal wall scarring or shrinkage as a result of the surgical procedure
